These planar diffused photodiodes are designed for either photoconductive mode (low capacitance, high speed applications) or photovoltaic mode (low noise, DC applications). Photodiodes are semiconductors that generate a current or voltage when illuminated by light. They have no internal gain, but can operate with much greater dynamic range than other types of photon detectors. These devices consist of a number of photosensitive areas imaged on a single substrate forming a one- or two-dimensional array with a common cathode substrate. They feature low crosstalk among adjacent elements and high uniformity in response. These types of devices provide a cost effective alternative in applications requiring several photodiodes, such as scanning, spectroscopy, color analysis etc. In addition, optical filtering can be applied for tuning to particular wavelengths or, in the case of X-ray scanning applications, scintillation crystals.
Silicon photodiodes can be coupled with a low noise preamplifier chip in the same package. This configuration makes them highly resistant to external noise and suitable for compact circuit design. Additionally, devices can also be provided with a built-in thermoelectric cooler to reduce the dark current and enhance performance.
The silicon avalanche photodiode is a photon detection device that offers high internal gain. It is ideal for use in high speed, low light level applications. We also offer several patented large area configurations enhanced for a variety of regions of the spectrums. These are available with built-in thermoelectric coolers to reduce dark current and enhance performance.
The SPCM is a self-contained module that detects single photons of light over the 400 - 1060 nm wavelength range; a range and sensitivity that often outperforms a PMT. The SPCM uses one APD or a stack of four APD with individual channels contained in one module. Each photodiode is both thermoelectrically cooled and temperature controlled and available with dark-count rates of less than 25 counts/second.
Cadmium Sulfoselenide sensors are low cost photoconductive devices for visible light measurement. Their resistance decreases as the light level increases with efficiency characteristics similar to the human eye. Typical applications are flame watch, photo cells and sunlight detection.
